It Started With a Pretty Simple Idea
We wanted to create a vegan website.
Not a revolutionary concept. Not a venture-backed startup. Just a useful, approachable site where people could discover vegan recipes, interesting stories and ideas that made eating vegan feel a little easier and more enjoyable.
We called it VeganEase.
Normally, turning that idea into a functioning business would involve a surprising number of moving parts.
There is branding, design, website development, photography, content creation, search optimization, analytics, email marketing, product development, social media and ongoing site maintenance.
Then there is the bigger problem.
Someone has to keep doing all of it.
That is where our experiment became interesting.
What If AI Didn't Just Help Build It?
At Wise Crescent, we had already been using AI extensively. But with VeganEase, we began asking a different question:
How much of a small digital business could we actually operate with AI?
We started with the website itself.
AI helped us think through the brand, structure the site, develop the user experience, write content and solve development problems.
That alone dramatically shortened the distance between having an idea and having something people could actually use.
But building a website isn't particularly interesting in the realm of AI.
The more interesting challenge was what happened the next day.
A content site needs content.
So we began creating systems for producing a new vegan recipe every day. Recipes included ingredients, instructions, nutritional information and images. We added a publication called the Daily Pea for vegan stories and ideas.
Then we experimented with more sophisticated content.
We created gourmet vegan meals with restaurant-style presentation and paired them with alcohol-free mocktails.
Instead of asking AI to write an article whenever we remembered, we started designing repeatable processes.
AI was moving from content creator to worker inside a system.
Then We Gave the System Responsibilities
This was an important transition.
Creating something when asked is useful.
Being responsible for something happening is different.
We created scheduled processes for generating and publishing content. We added checks designed to prevent the system from repeatedly creating similar material.
Then we created a watchdog.
Its job was not to create content. Its job was to check whether the other processes had done their jobs.
That distinction sounds small, but it represents something much larger about where we believe business AI is heading.
Businesses will not simply have AI that performs tasks.
They will increasingly have AI systems that perform, check, supervise and correct other processes.
And VeganEase also taught us why that supervision matters.
Things broke.
Scheduled processes occasionally failed. Authentication problems interrupted publishing. Content sometimes didn't appear when expected. Automation that looked reliable could suddenly stop working.
AI did not magically eliminate technology problems.
In fact, greater automation created a new requirement: knowing whether the automation had actually worked.
That may have been one of the most useful lessons of the entire experiment.
Then the Website Started Becoming a Business
Once content production was working, another question appeared.
Could AI help turn the audience and content into products?
We developed downloadable VeganEase entertaining packs built around complete experiences rather than individual recipes.
A dinner could include multiple courses, a mocktail pairing, presentation ideas, a shopping list and preparation guidance.
That required another layer of infrastructure.
We needed product management, payments, downloadable files, customer communications and ways to feature products throughout the site.
Again, AI helped us move from an idea to something operational.
Then came email.
Then social media.
Then analytics.
Each addition made VeganEase slightly less like a website and slightly more like a functioning digital business.
The Human Didn't Disappear
Perhaps the most important lesson from VeganEase is what didn't happen.
The human didn't become unnecessary.
Our role changed.
Instead of personally writing every article, coding every feature or performing every repetitive task, more of our time moved toward deciding what should exist, defining how it should work, reviewing results and correcting the system when reality didn't match our expectations.
The bottleneck gradually moved.
Producing things became easier.
Deciding what was worth producing became more important.
That distinction has implications far beyond VeganEase.
Why We Think This Matters to Small Businesses
Many conversations about business AI still begin with tools.
Which chatbot should we use?
Which AI writes the best marketing copy?
Which system creates the best images?
Those are reasonable questions, but they may be missing the larger opportunity.
Imagine looking at your company and asking:
What would we design differently if creating, researching, analyzing, monitoring and coordinating work suddenly became dramatically less expensive?
That is a very different conversation.
A ten-person company doesn't need to pretend it has 100 employees.
Instead, it can begin asking what ten talented people could accomplish if many of the constraints that previously consumed their time were reduced.
That is what VeganEase has become for us at Wise Crescent.
It is still a vegan website.
But behind the recipes, articles, products and cheerful food photography is something else.
It is a laboratory.
We are learning where AI works extraordinarily well, where it needs supervision, where automation becomes fragile, where human judgment becomes more valuable and how quickly an idea can now move from conversation to functioning reality.
And perhaps the most important lesson is this:
The AI opportunity for small business may not be doing the same work faster.
It may be discovering that you can now do things you previously would never have attempted at all.
